Mizzou Triangle Tigers Hosts Dinner for MAB Students
The Mizzou Triangle Tigers hosted a dinner for 12 students from the University of Missouri-Columbia who were here to volunteer during their winter break in January.
They were part of Mizzou Alternative Breaks (MAB) which gives students unique opportunities to gain a wider perspective while immersed in a life-changing week of service to people and communities around the world.
MAB is a student-led program on the campus of the University of Missouri that sends groups of 12 students across the country over spring, winter, and weekend breaks to work on various service issues, including HIV/AIDS, the environment, urban poverty, education and disability. In 2014, 1600 Mizzou students applied to be one of 850 travelers chosen for the program. Students pay an upfront fee which covers a portion of the trips. The majority of the funding comes from fundraising efforts of each student.
“Getting to interact with Mizzou students while enjoying a pasta dinner with fellow alumni, made for a memorable evening,” said Jill Hammergren, Mizzou Triangle Tigers president, “We’re delighted that they spent their break in North Carolina.”
While in the Triangle, the students stayed in a Durham church and volunteered their time to three organizations:
- Bridge II Sports, an adaptive sports organization in Durham.
- Learning Together, an inclusive preschool in Raleigh where 50 percent of the students have disabilities.
- Bright Star Stables, a therapeutic horse riding center in Rougemont.
When not volunteering their time, the students got to tour the campuses of UNC-Chapel Hill and Duke University as well as the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.

Mizzou Triangle Tigers Alumni Chapter Launches
The Mizzou Triangle Tigers alumni chapter is now officially operating. During the summer of 2014, a group of Mizzou alumni and friends diligently worked behind-the-scenes to set up the structure of our newly formed alumni chapter.
“It’s exciting to see the level of enthusiasm we have for Mizzou in the Triangle area,” said Jill Hammergren, new Mizzou Triangle Tigers President, “With more than 800 alumni in the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill Triangle region, we felt like the time was right for us to make this a reality.”
The chapter, which operates under the direction and guidance of the Mizzou Alumni Association, will offer Mizzou alumni and friends activities including social events, watch parties, networking opportunities, fundraising for student scholarships, and student engagement activities.
The Mizzou Alumni Association serves all Mizzou alumni and friends of the University of Missouri. According to the association’s rules and our chapter’s bylaws, anyone can be a member of the MAA. For each person who joins through the Mizzou Triangle Tigers membership link, our chapter receives financial support for alumni activities and credit toward the Columns Program.
“We encourage anyone who attended Mizzou, current students, parents, siblings and other family members of students, friends of the University of Missouri, and Missouri transplants living in the Triangle, across North Carolina or anywhere else in the world to use the Mizzou Triangle Tigers chapter to connect to the Mizzou traditions, support the university’s missions and programs, and to promote the educational and social activities within the Mizzou Alumni Association,” said Hammergren.
